  1. Eusthenopteron was closely related to the early four-footed animals (tetrapods).The skeleton had one bone in the upper limb and two bones in the lower limb, just like our human arms.
  2. Like all sarcopterygians, Eusthenopteron had two dorsal fins. One of today’s living sarcopterygians, Latimeria, may be seen in the Diversity of Life exhibition here at the Museum of Natural History.
  3. Eusthenopteron is the best known ancestor of modern four-footed animals, thanks to studies by the Swedish palaeontologist Erik Jarvik (1907–1998), who worked at this museum.
