Mucrospirifer, along with other, similar lampshells with extended, wing-like sides, had developed a shell shape that allowed it to be lifted by water currents. Being anchored to the sea bed by its stalk-like pedicle, however, it was not swept away: instead, it ‘flew’ like a paper kite. This eliminated the risk of getting buried in the bottom sediment and enabled Mucrospirifer to use the currents to filter out its food.
