This genus of alga formed bushy, tufted plants on the sea bed during the Cambrian. Marpolia has been found in other sites — in the western USA, the Czech Republic and elsewhere.
It is not known for certain what group of algae Marpolia belongs to: it may be either the cyanobacteria or the red algae.
