Unlike other early, heavy-skulled amphibian genera (such as Eryops and Mastodonsaurus) Microbrachis, although not closely related to modern amphibians, had a head more like a salamander’s.
Its limbs were short and it lived only in water. For this reason it kept gills throughout life, like the modern axolotl. Like all amphibians, past and present, Microbrachis laid its eggs in water.
