Hippurites was unique, and among the largest mussels that have ever existed. It was descended from oysters; but one of the half shells was shaped like a cup and the other like a flat lid. Hippurites mussels grew in colonies and, generation after generation, their shells built up reefs in a manner similar to the coral reefs of today.
