Echinosphaerites was one of the cystoids, an abundant group of echinoderms in the Ordovician. They are known in Swedish as kristalläpplen, "crystal apples", because their fossils are often filled with white calcite crystals.
These animals lived in large groups, and each individual was anchored to the sea bed with a thin, short stalk. On the upper side were a few simple arm-like structures used to catch organisms in the water.
