Amphicyrtoceras belonged to a group of cephalopods (oncocerids) with unusual rounded or pear-shaped shells and restricted shell openings. Fossils of young animals are hardly ever found — only adult individuals.

The juveniles may possibly have inhabited the deeper parts of the sea and returned to the coral reefs only when they were ready to breed (spawn).
