Amblypterus was common during the Permian, and its unsymmetrical tail fin probably limited its swimming speed. Like many other fish of this period, its scales were coated with enamel which provided good protection.
The shiny gold colour comes from the mineral pyrite (”fool’s gold”) which was added during the fossilization process.
This skull with lower jaw is a cast of the early amphibian Archegosaurus. Like its relatives, Eryops and Mastodonsaurus, Archegosaurus had a heavy skull with two large eye sockets. But Archegosaurus had a long snout and its life style was probably more like that of a crocodile.
